Weight Loss Programs

The principle behind the gain of excess weight is plain: the intake of energy increases as compared to the expenditure of energy. However, excess weight gain and obesity could be due to complex interactions between behavioral, genetic, and environmental factors. There are hundreds of strategies, diet plans, devices, and potions for effective weight loss and maintenance (1). Here, we will take about

Ketogenic Diet

This diet is quite the same as the low-carb and Atkins diet. Often known as the keto diet, it entails drastically lowering the consumption of carbohydrates and substituting them with an increased intake of fats. When the consumption of carbohydrates reduces, the body enters into a metabolic state referred to as ketosis. This increases the ability of the body to efficiently burn fat to generate energy. In the liver, fat is turned into ketones by this process to provide the brain with energy (2).
The keto diet significantly reduces the levels of insulin and sugar in the blood. This when combined with ketones offers some health benefits (2–4). It is evident from scientific studies that the keto diet can help in weight loss, improvement of health, and decreases the risk for diseases (5–9). The reason for the good outcome of the keto diet could be decreased levels of blood sugar, increased levels of ketones, and improved sensitivity of insulin (10,11).

Intermittent Fasting

Many diets concentrate on what type of food is being eaten, but intermittent fasting focuses on when the food will be eaten. Intermittent fasting is a diet that alternates eating and fasting by following a regular timetable (12). The pattern for eating followed in intermittent fasting focuses on not eating anything for extended periods. The duration of this period is usually between twelve and forty hours (13). The intake of coffee, water, and other beverages that do not offer calories are allowed during the fasting period. However, the intake of drinks containing calories or any solid food is strictly prohibited. People mainly try intermittent fasting because of two reasons; to manage their metabolic health and weight (14–17).

Medications For Weight Loss

The medications prescribed for the treatment of obesity and overweight function in various ways. Some medications, for example, can help you to gain the feeling of fullness soon or make you less hungry. Other medications may make the absorption of fats into your body difficult from the foods that you have eaten. The main purpose of weight management medication is to help those individuals who are suffering from health-related problems due to obesity and overweight or even
after significant efforts, one is not able to lose weight. The medications approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss include phenterminetopiramate (Qsymia), orlistat (Xenical, Alli), and semaglutide (Wegovy), liraglutide
(Saxenda), and naltrexone bupropion (Contrave). Setmelanotide (IMCIVREE) is the
sixth drug approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for limited use in individuals diagnosed with a rare specific genetic disorder for which genetic testing is required for confirmation (18

Aesthetic Medicine

The field of aesthetic medicine contains all those medical techniques and methods that help to enhance the physical appearance and increase patient satisfaction by utilizing procedures that do not involve many invasive cosmetic techniques. The specialty of aesthetic medicines is not limited to only plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Doctors from almost all specialties try to offer such services that fulfill the aesthetic desires and needs of their patients. Some procedures might require local anesthesia while others are performed without any anesthetics. Here we will talk about three aesthetic procedures.

BOTOX

This procedure is actually carried out with the help of the Botulinum toxin that contains the protein botox. Bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum produces Botulinum toxin. This toxin when used in the correct amount can help to decrease the wrinkles on the skin. This toxin temporarily prevents muscle movement by inhibiting the transmission of certain signals from nerves to reach the muscles. Mostly, these signals result in muscle contraction. Most commonly, Botox
injections are injected to fix wrinkles around the eye area and the forehead region by temporarily relaxing the muscles of the face (1).

Dermal Fillers

These consist of substances that are gel-like and introduced underneath the skin. Introducing dermal filler into the hands and face can help to enhance the appearance of lines on the face and improve the volume loss that results due to aging process or certain medical problems (2). With dermal filler, lips can gain their plumpness, facial contours can be enhanced, facial wrinkles and creases can be softened, or the appearance of depressed scars can be approved. Commonly used dermal fillers include calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid, polyalkylimide, polylactic acid, and polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA) (3).

Laser Therapy

Aesthetic medicine utilize laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) in a variety of treatments. The non-ablative treatments by laser have the ability to eradicate tissues from under the first skin. Severe skin damage can be removed with the help of a non-ablative laser and the recovery is also fast. The treatment with a non-ablative laser includes removing the presence of fine lines from cheeks, upper lips, and forehead, relaxing frown lines, tightening and smoothing the skin of lower and upper eyelids, removing brown spots, freckles, age spots, stretch marks, tattoos, crow’s feet, redness in the skin, ruptured blood vessels and to give an overall youthful appearance. The ablative treatments by laser only remove the uppermost layer of the skin and it is carried out by carbon dioxide and erbium lasers. It is commonly used for superficial skin damage due to sun or chronological aging (4).
